Are you planning a trip to In-N-Out Burger, but only have a $50 or $100 bill to pay with?
Many fast food restaurants do not accept bills over $20, so you may be wondering – is In-N-Out one of them? And if so, what should you do to ensure that you’re still able to place your order?
These are excellent questions. In this article, I’ll be covering In-N-Out Burger’s official policies, that I learned about after calling locations and speaking to managers in California, Texas, and Arizona.
Let’s get started!
Does In-N-Out Burger Accept $100 Bills?
Yes! According to the employees that I’ve talked to, it’s In-N-Out’s policy to accept all bill denominations, including $100 bills.
This means that you shouldn’t have a problem using your $100 bill at In-N-Out burger, even when placing a smaller order.
That being said, there will need to be enough money in the register for them to be able to provide you change. And depending on the time of day, this isn’t always possible.
However, if they are able to do so, they will be happy to accept (and provide change for) your $100 bill – with a few exceptions, which I’ll cover a little later.
Does In-N-Out Burger Accept $50 Bills?
Now that we know that In-N-Out Burger accepts $100 bills, it’s perhaps unsurprising to hear that they also accept $50 bills as well.
In fact, with fast food prices rising across the United States, it’s more common than ever for people to pay for their order using a $50 bill – especially if they are ordering for multiple people.
So, this is nothing out of the ordinary.
All In-N-Out Burger locations should be able to accept your $50 bill without any issues, regardless of your order size!
What About The Drive-Thru?
So far, we’ve talked about bill acceptance when going into the actual restaurant itself, and paying at the cashier’s desk.
But what if you’re going through the drive-thru?
Thankfully, the exact same policies apply!
As long as they’re able to do so, you should be able to pay using a $50 or $100 bill in In-N-Out’s drive-thru without any issues.
When Does In-N-Out Burger NOT Accept $50 / $100 Bills?
Because it’s In-N-Out policy to accept all bills, there are only a few situations where larger bills will not be accepted.
The first, as previously mentioned, is if there isn’t enough cash at the register to provide adequate change for your order.
This is more common early in the morning, or if someone in front of you also just paid using a $100 bill. Unfortunately in this situation, there’s not a whole lot that can be done.
Secondly, In-N-Out may deny your bill if they believe it to be counterfeit. While they will usually be able to pull a manager to verify the authenticity of the bill, sometimes inexperienced cashiers will refuse a bill regardless if it’s over $20.
Finally, some In-N-Out employees have admitted that they simply lie about there being enough cash in the register if somebody tries to pay with a $100 bill ($50 bills are usually fine.) Or, they’ll tell you that they’ll need to give you change in rolls of quarters, nickels or dimes, which obviously isn’t ideal.
Of course, most of the time paying with a $100 or $50 bill isn’t an issue – so you shouldn’t worry about the slim possibility of one of these things happening!
What Other Payment Methods Does In-N-Out Burger Accept?
If you want to be absolutely sure that you’ll receive your order without any issues, you may consider using an alternate payment method. Fortunately, In-N-Out Burger accepts many! For example…
- Most major debit cards
- Most major credit cards
- Mastercard
- American Express
- Visa
- Discover Card
- Apple Pay
- Samsung Pay
- Google Pay
- In-N-Out Burger Gift Cards
Note that prepaid cards are accepted as well.
Can In-N-Out Burger Legally Deny My $100 Bill?
If you do run into a situation where In-N-Out refuses to accept your money, it can lead you to wonder – do they legally have to? Do you have any recourse if they refuse?
For better or worse, there is no law requiring In-N-Out to accept larger bills. They are free to set their own rules regarding what payment methods they’re willing to accept, and which they aren’t – and this includes bill denominations.
In fact, they aren’t even required to accept cash at all, according to the Federal Reserve.
So, please don’t cause problems for employees if they refuse to accept your $100 bill – it usually isn’t their fault! Though, since it is the restaurant’s policy to accept them when they’re able to do so, you can always ask to speak to a manager if you’re concerned.
Conclusion
All In-N-Out burger locations accept both $50 and $100 bills, as long as they have cash in the register to provide change.
While I verified this in California, Texas, and Arizona, this should also apply to locations in Utah, Nevada and Oregon as well.
